One minute you have smooth black tarmac, the next minute you are crossing a river of melted snow or climbing a pass so high the air feels thin. 1. The Mountain King: Royal Enfield Himalayan 452cc
You know the old Himalayan? This new one is a totally different animal. It is built for these mountains because it was tested right here!
- Liquid Cooled Engine: This is very important. When you are climbing the Khardung La pass, the air is thin, but this engine (the “Sherpa 452”) stays cool and powerful. It gives 40 BHP—that is plenty of power to overtake those big trucks on the loops.
- Big Wheels for Big Rocks: It has a 21-inch front wheel. This means when there is a big stone or a deep hole in the road, the bike just rolls over it like it’s nothing.
- Google Maps on the Screen: It has a round digital screen where you can see the maps. No more stopping every five minutes to check your phone!
- Best for: If you want to go off-road, visit Zanskar, or cross deep water, this is the bike for you. It loves the dirt!
2. The Smooth Rider: Harley Davidson 440x
Many people are surprised! A Harley in Ladakh? Yes! But this is the 440x, and it is a power cruiser that handles our roads very well.
- Torque like a Tractor: This bike has 38Nm of torque. You don’t need to change gears all the time. Just twist the throttle, and it pulls you up the mountain very smoothly.
- Comfort for the Back: The seat is very nice and the riding position is relaxed. If you are doing long days from Leh to Pangong or Nubra, your body will not feel so tired.
- Stability: It feels very heavy and “planted” on the road. When the wind is blowing hard on the More Plains, the Harley stays steady.
- Best for: If you love the highway, the smooth curves of the Magnetic Hill road, and want to ride with “style” and comfort, choose the Harley.
