Spring is Coming!
Julley! When people think about Ladakh, they only think about white snow or big brown mountains. But you know? There is a secret time. A time when the air is not too cold, and the valleys start to look like a dream. We call it Chuli Mentok—the Apricot Blossom.
In April, when the winter is saying goodbye, the trees in Ladakh wake up. Suddenly, the gray land becomes pink and white. It is the first sign of life after the long, long winter. If you are tired of the city and want to see something that makes your heart quiet, you must come for the Apricot Blossom Festival.

What is Apricot Blossom Festival?
In our local language, Apricot is called “Chuli” and flower is “Memtok”. So, this is the Chuli Memtok festival. The Department of Tourism organizes this to show the world how beautiful our spring is.
For us Ladakhis, this is a very happy time. We come out of our houses, wear our best traditional clothes (the Goncha), and we sing and dance under the pink trees. It is not just for photos; it is a celebration that we survived the winter and now the nature is giving us a gift.
Where to see the Pink Trees?
Not all of Ladakh gets flowers at the same time because some places are very high and very cold. For the best blossom, you have to go to the lower valleys where it is a bit warm.
1. Aryan Valley (Dha & Hanu)
This is a very special place. The people here are different, their culture is very old. When the blossoms come here, the whole village looks like a painting. The flowers against the green river and big rocks—oh, it is so beautiful!
2. Sham Valley (Garkhone & Khaltse)
This area is famous for apricots. Places like Skuru and Sumoor in Nubra Valley also get beautiful pink flowers. If you drive from Leh toward Srinagar, you will see many villages full of white and pink clouds on the trees.

What to do during the Festival?
- Taste Local Food: You can try the fresh apricot juice. It is very sweet and healthy. We also make Paba and Skye—our local food that makes you strong.
- Watch the Dance: You will see our elders dancing the Shondol. They move very slowly and gracefully. It is very peaceful to watch.
- Meet the Locals: During the festival, we are very happy to welcome guests. You can sit with us, drink butter tea, and hear stories about the old days.
- Photography: If you like taking photos, this is heaven. The pink flowers, the blue sky, and the snow on the mountain tops… you don’t need a filter!
Important Tips for Travelers
- Check the Dates: Usually, the blossom happens between April 4th and April 18th. But nature is the boss! Sometimes it is early, sometimes late. Always ask us at Ladakh 365 before you book your flight.
- Clothes: It is spring, but it is still Ladakh! The sun is warm, but when the wind blows or the sun goes down, it is very cold. Bring a good jacket.
- Respect the Trees: Please do not pluck the flowers. These flowers will become the sweet apricots we eat and sell later. Let them stay on the tree for everyone to see.
- Sunscreen: The sun in Ladakh is very strong. Even in spring, your skin can burn easily.
